Freedom 251, The 4$ Smartphone : Should you buy it ?

Posted on February 20, 2016 by anuj
There's a lot of buzz on the internet about the cheapest android smartphone in the market which costs about 3.7$ (251 Rs).It's the cheapest smartphone in the world till date.

Ringing Bells Pvt. Ltd;a Noida Based Firm in the capital of India have recently launched an android smartphone named as "Freedom 251".This phone is a part of the Digital India Campaign and is thus heavily subsidized by The Government of India.

Freedom 251 Smartphone

First, lets see the product specifications :

The phone has a 4" (10.2 cms) qHD IPS display with a screen resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. It is powered by MediaTek 1.3 GHz Quad-Core MT6582 processor, has 1 GB of RAM,8 GB of Internal Storage and Externally Expandable upto 32 GB of memory.

There’s also a 3.2 MP rear camera with auto-focus, a 0.3 MP VGA front camera, a 1450mAh battery and dual-SIM 3G support, so you’re not getting a dumb phone either. The phone runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop, and will come with a bunch of preloaded apps such as Women Safety,Farmer,Fisherman,Medical and Google play.

Comparing the device specs with current phones in the market,it's cost would be around 3000 Rs (43-44 $).

By looking at the specs you can just buy it first and then decide what you'll use it for.For 4 $ even if you drop it and break it,you can buy another one pretty easily than spending a money and gas rather than going to the service center.

Coming to the question : Should You buy the Phone ?

Before answering the question, lets just have a look at the brand and its price (which is cheaper than a Pizza tho !!)

The company named "Ringing bells" in smartphone market is an unknown name even in the Indian Market. As an Indian customer whoever comes across such products are termed as 'China Products' (an umbrella term in brands that you'll never find second phone of in the market).

Mr. Murli Manohar Joshi and Mr. Mohit Goel at the launch

Livemint found out that there’s little known about the company, and that it has Sushma Devi, Rajesh Kumar and Mohit Kumar Goel listed as it Directors in public records. Mohit Kumar Goel holds a few academic degrees, and hails from a family who primarily dealt with agri-products, venturing into telecom only in September 2015. As Livemint quotes, this shift from agriculture to technology was spurred by the “Modi government’s extensive work and obvious commitment to “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”” (roughly translates into “Development for All”).

Freedom 251 was launched by the guests Mr.Murli Manohar Joshi,Member of Parliament. The phone was launched under "Make In India" banner on 17th February 2016.The booking is from 18th Feb to 21 February 8 PM and the company claims to finish all its deliveries by June 30.

The Price :

How does a company manufacture a phone which is cheaper than a micro SD card ??

There are many possible theories to consider :
  • The phone could be heavily subsidized by The Government of India.
  • It could be subsidized by a carrier.
  • Maybe the company has actually scale down the costs of the device to an extent that it even cuts down the Chinese. That's nearly not possible as the product would cost upto 20 $.There are also other costs such as advertising, marketing(All the front page ads in top dailies do cost a lot of money) and also after sales services. The company guarantees 1 year warranty on device and claims to have 650 service centers across India.

Factoring all this it is nearly impossible to make a smartphone as low as 4 $ and the possibility of the last theory is least considerable.

Why we think you should not buy it :

Considering the raising issues and concerns on the social media about the device, lets have a look :

There's a lot of controversy about the device.
17th Feb 2016
18th Feb 2016

Firstly the product on the website had another phone showcased having three capacitive buttons untill recently, before few hours of the launch the image was changed. This created a lot of confusion at the time of the launch as then the product did not look like the product on the website, rather looked like the iPhone-ish design and had the circle button even the icons were copied. So,the confusion was legit.

Also the product that media received looked like a re-branded device rather than one produced by Ringing Bells themselves. While rebranding is very common,in this case this raises issues because the product was already touted success of "Make In India" campaign.

The beta prototype that was released at launch event was an Adcom product. Adcom is a New Delhi-based importer of IT products. The closest matching product is the Adcom Ikon 4, which is on sale in the Indian market for INR 3,599 ($53). When the team at Hindustan Times got in touch with Adcom, the marketing head denied any knowledge of an Adcom device being used!

Ringing bells could easily deny that it is not an Adcom product. But they overlooked a major factor. The Device that they showcased at the launch was an Adcom Device with the front logo covered in white ink. Here are the uncovering pics :

The white inked front is visible in several media videos. Someone somewhere thought it was a good idea to cover up branding with peel-able white ink, visible even from afar. The tricolor sticker on the back is also for allegedly hiding the Adcom branding. We hope that there was some really impeccable use of logic and reasoning behind this that we just can’t grasp, because there is really not much we can come up with to explain.

Also the phone is on the edge of copyright lawsuit from Apple as it very clearly copies the icons and the front layout is same as that of iPhone, complete with the round home button. In countries like India violating copyrights is no big deal and the implements are also not that strict.

But if the Freedom 251 catches up a lot of market share in the rural areas, we can be sure that Apple would like a bite out of it as well.

Freedom 251 icons

Recently NDTV found out that the Freedom 251 is also not certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as being safe for use in India. This means that the phone does not carry a minimum guarantee of its quality and safety from overheating and fire hazards, amongst others. Getting BIS certification is a costly and time-consuming affair, so the Freedom 251 skipping these does not bode well for the safety of the product, but is consistent with the cut-corners business model.

Do note that no other phone from Ringing Bells Pvt. Ltd. or even Adcom for that matter appear on the BIS page, but other notable and popular manufacturers do. This is certainly a serious matter if the device is to make its way into the hands of thousands of people in the country.

Freedom 251 is not a people's phone. It's a ray of hope to a common man in rural areas to get access to vast plethora of knowledge through Internet. But how does a poor man buy the phone when it is sold online ? He doesn't get to.Because the cost of the phone would impact if it's sold by retailers.

Combined with the limited time frame for booking and website downtown and most important fact that you need internet in first place to buy the phone makes it out of reach of the poor.

Freedom 251

For $4, you can use it as an alarm clock and still be satisfied with its performance. But it still is a phone, and an Android at that. As such, it can do all the functions that one expects from a low-end handset. You obviously won’t be able to run the latest Asphalt on it, nor would you be able to take excellent low light images from its camera. But looking at the bang-per-buck ratio as a final consumer, this is arguably the best device you can buy in the market right now (as far as value goes).

Ringing Bells Pvt. Ltd.’s Freedom 251 surely has a lot of us talking. Whether you smell a scam in the making, or whether you foresee a future uncovering of a corruption racket caused in the making of the device, or whether you see a visionary entrepreneurial team looking to disrupt the market, we can all agree that the Freedom 251 brought questions aplenty in our minds. We hope the company stands true on the promise of providing the poor man with his phone, opening up his world with opportunities.

What do you think about the Freedom 251? Do you look forward to purchasing this device in your country, if at all it arrives? Will the phone spur other manufacturers to a race to the bottom? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Other Hosting Types

Posted on February 13, 2016 by anuj
Web Hosting

In the previous article,I've written about Hosting and General Types of hosting. In this article,as I've mentioned here, that there are 17 types of hosting, out of which 4 are in general and are discussed here.

These types of hosting also are based on the site's requirement, technical knowledge, money the user wants to invest, performance, skill requirement and server control.

1. Free web hosting service

Is offered by different companies with limited services, sometimes supported by advertisements, and often limited when compared to paid hosting.

What is Free Hosting
Free web hosting can be a good choice when you just want to build a non-critical website for fun. Very often in a free hosting environment, connection speed is slow, website can be down frequently, and advertising banners is automatically added to your website.

Some companies require you to purchase your domain name to receive free hosting services from them, while others offer you a free subdomain under them, such as [yourname.webhost.com]. Be careful as you will not be able to transfer these free subdomains.

2. Reseller web hosting:

What is Reseller Web Hosting

It allows clients to become web hosts themselves. Resellers could function, for individual domains, under any combination of these listed types of hosting, depending on who they are affiliated with as a reseller. Resellers' accounts may vary tremendously in size: they may have their own virtual dedicated server to a colocated server.

Many resellers provide a nearly identical service to their provider's shared hosting plan and provide the technical support themselves.

With Reseller Hosting you can:

  • Be your own hosting company — make money hosting and developing websites.
  • Create your own hosting plans that are tailored to your business and customers.
  • Host and bill your customers under your own brand.
  • Sell more plans, and keep the profits.
  • Create independent cPanel control panels for each of your customers.

3. Managed hosting service:

What is Managed Hosting

In this service, the user gets his or her own Web server but is not allowed full control over it (user is denied root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); however, they are allowed to manage their data via FTP or other remote management tools.

The user is disallowed full control so that the provider can guarantee quality of service by not allowing the user to modify the server or potentially create configuration problems. The user typically does not own the server. The server is leased to the client.

4. Colocation web hosting service:

What Is Colocation Web Hosting

It's similar to the dedicated web hosting service, but the user owns the colo server; the hosting company provides physical space that the server takes up and takes care of the server. This is the most powerful and expensive type of web hosting service. In most cases, the colocation provider may provide little to no support directly for their client's machine, providing only the electrical, Internet access, and storage facilities for the server.

In most cases for colo, the client would have his own administrator visit the data center on site to do any hardware upgrades or changes. Formerly, many colocation providers would accept any system configuration for hosting, even ones housed in desktop-style minitower cases, but most hosts now require rack mount enclosures and standard system configurations.

5. Clustered hosting:

What is Clustered Hosting

It's having multiple servers hosting the same content for better resource utilization. Clustered servers are a perfect solution for high-availability dedicated hosting, or creating a scalable web hosting solution.

A cluster may separate web serving from database hosting capability. (Usually web hosts use clustered hosting for their shared hosting plans, as there are multiple benefits to the mass managing of clients)

6. Grid hosting:

This form of distributed hosting is when a server cluster acts like a grid and is composed of multiple nodes.

7. Home Server

What Is home Server

Home server: usually a single machine placed in a private residence can be used to host one or more web sites from a usually consumer-grade broadband connection. These can be purpose-built machines or more commonly old PCs. Some ISPs actively attempt to block home servers by disallowing incoming requests to TCP port 80 of the user's connection and by refusing to provide static IP addresses.

A common way to attain a reliable DNS host name is by creating an account with a dynamic DNS service. A dynamic DNS service will automatically change the IP address that a URL points to when the IP address changes.

Some specific types of hosting provided by web host service providers and are used for those tasks only.

  • File hosting service: hosts files, not web pages
  • Image hosting service: hosts images
  • Video hosting service:Hosts video
  • Blog hosting service:Hosts Blogs
  • Paste bin: Used For Storing and Sharing text
  • Shopping cart software
  • E-mail hosting service
Hence these are the types of hosting.Feel free to drop any questions down in the comments.

Types of Hosting

Posted on February 12, 2016 by anuj

In the previous article, we discussed about Hosting and domain name and their functionality. In this article I will explain the types of Hosting, their uses, application and how they differ from each other.

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server owned or leased for use by clients, as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center.

Now to the types of Hosting..

In all there about 17 different types of web hosting services. All of them have their own pros and cons.More or less, the particular type of hosting is based upon the type and requirement of the website or as the administrator wants it to be.

But in general, there are 4 types of web hosting. They are Shared Hosting,Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting,Dedicated Hosting and Cloud Hosting.

While all types of hosting servers will act as a storage centre for your website, they differ in the amount of storage capacity, control, technical knowledge requirement, server speed, and reliability.

Let’s have a look at the main differences between a shared, VPS, dedicated, and cloud hosting.

1. Shared Hosting

Shared Hosting

Shared web hosting is the most common type of web hosting, and is also the easiest to start out on. Shared hosting is a service where one server is shared between many customers. This typically offers the following advantages and disadvantages:

  • It's cheaper – you don't need to pay for the whole server upfront.
  • It's easier to use – the server is preconfigured with the most popular options and your hosting company will take care of any maintenance and security updates for you.
  • You share the server resources with your neighbors – if one site becomes really busy it may affect (and slow down) all other sites on that server.
  • It can be less flexible – like living in a shared apartment block your neighbors need to be considered. Similar to exclusions on keeping pets or throwing wild parties (but less fun), you probably won't be able to block a specific port or modify a core component.
  • Because shared web hosting is the most common type of web hosting, most hosting companies simply refer to it as web hosting or website hosting.

Disadvantages:

No root access, limited ability to handle high traffic levels or spikes, site performance can be affected by other sites on the same server.

2. Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting

VPS Hosting

Also known as Virtual Dedicated Server.VPS hosting is a type of web hosting that uses Virtual Private Servers. Although the websites are hosted on the same physical machine, VPS allows each website to be fully independent as if each were on its own separate machine.

Somewhere between shared hosting (a lot of people on one server) and dedicated hosting (one account on a server), is Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting. In this model you have your own dedicated server, but the server is a virtual machine, not a physical one.

This provides a mix of the benefits (and disadvantages) of both shared and dedicated hosting plans.

With VPS hosting, you have complete control over the environment, just as you would with a dedicated server. This is especially helpful if you are developing custom applications or are running a SaaS (software-as-as-service) business.

You generally have much more access to server resources with VPS hosting as compared to shared hosting. While the various virtual machines are all sharing server resources, there are usually many fewer of them on a server in a VPS environment. You are alloted a much larger portion of the overall computing power and bandwidth.

There also many fewer security issues. VPS accounts have their IP address, and the virtualization layer means that you are insulated from any problems that might arise from problems on other sites.

Disadvantages:

Limited ability to handle high traffic levels or spikes, your site performance can still be somewhat affected by other sites on the server.

3. Dedicated Server Hosting

Dedicated Server Hosting

With dedicated server hosting, you have complete control over an entire server. This has many advantages, but it is also more expensive and more complicated.

When you have direct and complete access to the server that is running your website, you can install any kind of niche software you like, make changes to the operating system or language interpreters, tweak configuration settings. For certain applications, like running an enterprise management system or building custom software, you need this level of control.

The other major advantage to a dedicated server is that you are the only one consuming server resources. This significantly increases your speed and performance.

Of course, if you are able to do anything you want on your server, you also become responsible for doing pretty much everything that needs to be done. This includes keeping all the software up to date and debugging issues if you accidentally create any weird conflicts or problems.

Dedicated server hosting can be very expensive also. With shared hosting, there might be 100 customers on a single server. With a dedicated server, you are the only one — and the difference in cost reflects that.

Disadvantages:

With great power comes a greater cost. Dedicated servers are very expensive and it’s only recommended to those who need the maximum control and better server performance.

4. Cloud Hosting

Cloud Hosting

Cloud hosting is essentially a meeting place half way between shared hosting and dedicated hosting, yet has some pretty cool advantages as well. Cloud servers still share the physical server hardware with other cloud servers, but special virtualization technology partitions, or splits-up, the physical hardware so that each cloud server has its own dedicated resources and can be configured almost like a fully dedicated server.

VPS customers still share the physical server hardware with other VPS customers, but special virtualization technology partitions the server so that each partition has its own dedicated resources and can be configured almost like a full dedicated server.

This typically offers the following advantages :

  • Get the most flexibility - cloud servers provide the most flexible environment available in the hosting sphere.
  • The cloud adapts to physical hardware problems and puts your site in a reliable location automatically. It also offers a fast and seamless upgrade option for those times when website traffic gets high.
  • Your website will have dedicated resources – with dedicated bandwidth, CPU and memory. So even though you are sharing server equipment with your neighbors, you are not sharing the resources that you purchased. That way, those high traffic neighbors sharing the same equipment won’t be stealing your server resources when you need them for your business.
  • Fewer websites occupy the same server – your website will have more resources at its disposal than shared web hosting.
  • Freedom to configure your server – the virtualization software provides much more freedom to make your server they way you want it; but it also assumes a higher level of technical experience.
Cloud hosting offers unlimited ability to handle high traffic or traffic spikes. Here’s how it works: A team of servers (called a cloud) work together to host a group of websites. This allows multiple computers to work together to handle high traffic levels or spikes for any particular website.

Disadvantages:

Many cloud hosting setup do not offers root access (required to change server settings and install some software), higher cost.

These are the general types of web hosting. Please do share if you found the article useful.

Here is a list on Other Hosting Types.

What is Hosting

Posted on February 02, 2016 by anuj
To start a website, registering a Domain name and opting a Hosting service is Important as they will give you space and unique domain name (which will be your site's name) where you'll install WordPress and install your themes.

In the following article I'll discuss about Hosting.

Hosting is generally termed as to store a website or other data on servers or computers so that it's available and can be accessed all over the internet. The business of maintaining ,housing and serving files for a website is called "Web hosting".

Web Hosting

The website space provided by the Web hosting company may differ from plan to plan but what actually matters is the fast connection to internet they provide. Most of them have up to gigabits of network connection lines.

Typically when compared to a company which wants to host their own site individually, would require similar infrastructure which would be very expensive.

Using a hosting service lets many companies share the cost of the internet connection for serving files. Some of the Internet Service Providers (ISP) offer their customers free space for a website which is hosted by one of their computers or a part of the server.

Working of web Hosting

A number of hosting companies describe their services as virtual hosting.Virtual hosting usually implies that their services will be transparent and that each Web site will have its own domain name and set of e-mail addresses.

In most usages, hosting and virtual hosting are synonyms. Some hosting companies let you have your own virtual server, the appearance that you are controlling a server that is dedicated entirely to your site.

Now what is a "Domain Name"

A Domain Name is the name of the website. It can be anything you decide.Technically,a domain name locates an organisation or an entity on the Internet. It is used to identify one or more IP addresses.Domain names are used in URLs to identify particular Web pages.

How to choose Domain Name

For Example : Domain name google.com represents to a dozens of IP addresses.

It’s important to remember you have to have a domain name so your website can be found on the Internet. The domain name is essentially your company’s Internet address; the same way your company’s street address is used to find your offices, a domain name is used to find your website.
Considering this, pick a domain name that’s memorable and relevant!

The conversion of the Domain names to IP Address is done by a server named DNS.DNS stands for 'Domain Name Server'.

The function of Domain Name Server is pretty simple. The website fetched in browser goes to the Domain Name Server and then sends the site's IP Address back to the browser then is directed to the website you want to browse.

Working of DNS

This is how the DNS works.Make sure you have a unique domain name and email address for it.

In the next article I'll Write about the types of hosting, their features and the application of each Type of Hosting.

Thanks for reading the article. Please comment below.
